Action Plan
The first thing that we are going to do is a survey of our area. We will find out which sports facilities are there in our area and which sports they offer. We are going to find out if the students are satisfied with the sports that are offered, the coaching that they receive and the equipment that they use. We will then interview Mr. Milind Panchal, an administrator in the Field Archery Association and India and Mr Pranav Shelatkar, a personal trainer who trains people at various gyms such as Anytime Fitness and Cloud Nine Gym. We will also interview ten people with various backgrounds who use the various sports facilities in our area. We will also be conducting an awareness activity in our school by putting up posters. By doing all of this, we will be able to conclude whether the people in our region are aware of the need to stay fit or not.
Our Project
Our region (Kandivali) is an area with a lot of parks and sports clubs. People show a lot of interest in sports. People here are enthusiastic about participating in sports and also encourage their children to do so. It is showing progressive development in the field of sports.
The various sports centers in and around are region are:

We interviewed 10 adults [whose names aren't mentioned to respect their privacy]. We asked them how often they exercised. All of them replied positively and their replies have been converted into the bar graph shown.
We also asked them if they played any sport. Though most replied 'no', four of them replied with various answers such as boxing, tennis, badminton and football. We inquired whether any of them take part in events such as marathons, cycling events or other competitions and six of them replied that they did participate in such events frequently.
We were asked to survey the sports facilities around us and find out if they are well maintained or not and the problems associated with them.
The sports facilities are quite well maintained. The major problems with the sports facilities would be that:
The positive points would be that:
The sports facilities are quite well maintained. The major problems with the sports facilities would be that:
- Authorities do not feel the need to focus on the safety and security of the players during tournaments.
- Academics are given greater importance as compared to sports.
- Proper hygiene and sanitation is not maintained at venues.
The positive points would be that:
- The sports facilities are cheaper to access.
- Most facilities have invested in a variety of sports ranging from swimming to basketball to cricket.
- They are accessible at all times.
- The grounds are extensive and contain various practice areas like badminton and basketball courts, cricket pitches, turfs, volleyball courts and many more.
- The coaches are professional and experienced. They show keen interest in the development of each individual.
There are enough facilities for sports for each age group. There are jogging parks for senior citizens as well as play area for kids. The facilities are good enough but there is always scope for improvement. There is a need to upgrade the equipment. Proper sanitation and hygiene needs to be maintained at competition venues.
The sports facilities provided in our school are: football, handball, basketball, volleyball, cricket, athletics, chess, skating, carom and gymnastics. As shown in the chart, most students are satisfied with the sports provided in the school. |

Interviews
Mr. Milind Panchal is an administrator in the Field Archery Association of India and a coach in Sagittarius Sports Club.
1] What drove you into the field of sports?
I think that it was solely my passion and love for sports that made me want to achieve something in this field.
2] Which sport aroused your interest initially?
Like any other Indian, what initially interested me was cricket. I used to attend camps in my school. I then started kabaddi which I played from grade 4 to 12, malkhamb and karate. I started archery in 2008.
3] How much time and effort have you invested to get to where you are now?
I have spent a lot of time and worked really hard to get to where I currently am. I started out as just a scorer for competitions but a hobby for the sport developed soon. I practiced a lot and became a coach as I wasn’t financially stable. My passion for the sport fueled my desire to excel in it and now I am a level 2 international coach.
4] What future do you see for sports in India?
I think that sports has a bright future in India. Our population is more and this means that there is more talent seeded in the next generation. Earlier cricket used to overshadow all the other sports. Though cricket still has a humongous fanbase, other sports are slowly gaining public interest due to various new “leagues” such as the Indian Super League.
5] Have the children responded according to your expectations?
As Olympics, Commonwealth and other games are telecasted on the television, there is a huge hype about those sports.I promote games as a federation administrator, coach and player. The children are engrossed in their mobile phones and suffer from many health issues such as nearsightedness and obesity and this can be cured if the parents and the schools push children into playing at least one sport.
6] Nowadays, parents are investing a lot of money to ensure that their children get proper coaching. Do you think that this is a positive change?
Parents shouldn’t force their children into sports. Many parents don’t have knowledge about the sport and push a child without the physical abilities into a sport beyond his capacity. They force disinterested kids into sports and expect them to do well. Age restrictions placed on certain sports are due to reasons such as that child should have some mental as well as physical growth but many parents do not realize that. Parents should pay more attention to a child’s hobbies instead.

Mr.Pranav Shelatkar is a freelance personal trainer who works at multiple gyms across Mumbai and is a transformation specialist.
1] What drove you into the field of sports?
As a child I was very active and was also fond of watching movies of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. When I turned 18 I myself realised that my body is the temple of my soul and if I worship it I will definitely be a fit person and that drove me into fitness.
2] Which sport aroused your interest initially?
I was initially interests in bodybuilding. I guess I got those genetics from my father. So when I was growing, I use to see my father lifting dumbbells and working on biceps. And that gradually aroused my interest in fitness and bodybuilding.
3] How much time and effort have you invested to get to where you are now?
I have been training since I was 18 years old and it took me 7-8 years to reach the point I am currently standing today. Fitness is a never ending process. There is always a room for improvement and to learn new things. You have to stay consistent to reach your desired goal.
4] What future do you see for sports in India?
Earlier the government use to pay very less to the Indian athletes and that’s the reason the participation was also less but today the times has changed. The mentality of people towards fitness has also evolved. So I believe that it is going to grow.
5] Have the masses responded according to your expectations?
We have a very bright future as celebrities these days are also investing lot of money in sports, like the Indian Super League (ISL) and the Pro Kabaddi League. And many of the children and the youth see these celebrities as their role model. So yes, definitely the masses have responded very well. not only to the game of cricket but also football. kabaddi and other sports.
Awareness Activity
Comparison
We compared our project with CSW Van de Perre and Schoonhovens College.
Fitness has utmost importance in Netherlands. People prefer to cycle or walk to work and other places. Sports are played only as extracurricular activities. Most children [aged between 10 and 15] indulge in sports which are popular in their region such as football and hockey. Other popular sports are korfball, judo, tennis and taekwondo. People are satisfied woth the sports facilities. A variety of clubs are availible and offer all kinds of sports.
In India, though most people know that they need to, there is still scope for improvement in the steps they take towards fitness. Children of all ages participate in sports such as cricket, football, kabaddi and others. People prefer to use public transports over walking or cycling. Nearly everyone is happy with the sports facilities in our region and extensively use them.

Reflection
Overall, it was a great experience. All of had a great time doing this project. We learned a lot. People were really interested and helpful during our surveys. They were keen to give their honest input. We believe that we could have illustrated our project better. The work distribution could also have been better.
Conclusion
Through our research, we came to a conclusion that most people in our region are aware of the need to exercise regularly. People know that the human body is designed and evolved to be regularly active. Being fit is not just about running on a treadmill or lifting weights, it can be a dance class or a team activity like basketball. The people sure do reap the benefits of the facilities available! People are willing to devote their time and efforts into the betterment of the temple of their soul, their body.
